Shielding and Lubrication

The 6209 bearing ships in three configurations. Open bearings suit oil-bath, circulating-oil, or oil-mist lubrication at the full 7,800 RPM speed rating. ZZ metal shields use non-contact SPCC steel covers pressed into the outer ring, forming a labyrinth gap that blocks workshop debris, belt dust, and airborne contamination without friction penalty; speed remains 7,800 RPM.

2RS rubber seals employ nitrile (NBR) contact lips riding on the inner ring shoulder. Seal friction reduces the speed rating to 5,100 RPM. At 85mm OD — the largest seal contact diameter in the 6200 series below 6210 — the seal friction torque reaches 20 to 30 watts per bearing at 3,600 RPM. For IE3 premium-efficiency motors where the total loss budget is tight, the recommended configuration is ZZ shields with a non-contact labyrinth seal integrated into the motor end bell, providing IP5X protection with zero seal friction.

Factory fill is polyurea-thickened mineral grease at 25 to 30 percent. The 19mm width and 85mm OD provide approximately 17.8 cmu00b3 of grease capacity. For mining conveyor pulleys, a lithium-complex grease with MoSu2082 EP additives resists water washout. For food-processing washdown, 440C stainless steel rings and FKM seals are available. For high-temperature industrial fan applications, fluorinated grease with PTFE thickener supports 180u00b0C intermittent with an open configuration and machined brass cage.

Nine 12.7mm balls — same diameter as the 6208 bearing — run at a larger pitch diameter (approximately 65mm vs 60mm) due to the 85mm OD. The larger pitch circle increases the number of balls in the loaded zone at any instant, contributing 12 percent to the dynamic load increase over the 6208 bearing. The 32.7 kN rating supports belt-tension side loads up to approximately 8.2 kN at a 1.2 service factor.
