6204 Deep Groove Ball Bearing 20x47x14mm

The 6204 bearing is the entry point to 20mm-shaft deep groove ball bearings in the 6200 heavy series. At 47mm OD and 14mm width, it carries 12.8 kN dynamic load — 33 percent more than the 6203 bearing (17mm bore) and 37 percent more than the 6004 bearing at the same 20mm bore. It is the most commonly specified bearing size for IEC frame 90 and 100 electric motors from 2.2 kW to 4 kW globally. GCr15 bearing steel, ABEC-1 or ABEC-3 precision, and three sealing configurations.

Shielding and Lubrication

The 6204 bearing ships in three configurations. Open bearings accept oil bath, oil-mist, or grease-pack lubrication at the full 16,000 RPM speed rating. ZZ metal shields use non-contact SPCC steel covers pressed into the outer ring, forming a narrow labyrinth that blocks coarse workshop debris, belt dust, and fiber contamination. Because the ZZ shield does not contact the inner ring, it adds zero friction — speed stays at 16,000 RPM.

2RS rubber seals employ nitrile (NBR) contact lips riding on the inner ring shoulder. The lip blocks water spray, cement dust, agricultural soil, and chemical mist. The tradeoff is a speed reduction to 10,000 RPM due to seal lip friction and a temperature rise of 10°C to 15°C at rated speed. At the 14mm width, the seal groove depth is 2mm wider than the 6203 bearing, providing a longer seal lip wear path and proportionally larger grease reservoir.

Factory fill is polyurea-thickened mineral grease at 25 to 30 percent of free internal volume. The internal volume supports approximately 3.5 cm³ of grease — roughly twice that of a 6202 bearing — extending relubrication intervals in continuous-duty applications. For food-processing washdown environments, 440C stainless steel rings and FKM seals are available against drawing review.

Performance

The 6204 bearing delivers 12.8 kN dynamic load and 6.55 kN static load. Nine 7.938mm balls run in deep-groove raceways ground to ABEC-1 or ABEC-3 tolerance. It is the first size in the 6200-series deep groove ball bearing family to carry above 12 kN — the threshold where the bearing transitions from light-duty to general industrial motor service. The 6203 bearing (17x40x12mm) carries 9.58 kN; stepping to the 6204 bearing gains 33 percent more capacity with 3mm larger bore and 7mm larger OD.

Against the 6004 bearing — same 20mm bore — the 6204 bearing adds 37 percent more dynamic load (12.8 vs 9.36 kN) through 5mm more OD and 2mm more width. In a 3 kW electric motor at 1,450 RPM with 3.2 kN radial load, the 6204 bearing delivers approximately 28,000 hours L10 life versus 14,000 hours for the 6004 bearing — doubling the service interval. For OEM motor manufacturers, this difference determines whether the bearing is a warranty-replacement item or a life-of-machine component.

Compared to the 6304 bearing (20x52x15mm, 15.9 kN), the 6204 bearing saves 5mm OD, 1mm width, and 38g of weight (106g vs 144g) while retaining 81 percent of the load capacity. When the 20mm shaft and 47mm housing are fixed by the motor frame design, the 6204 bearing is the correct selection.

OEM and Customization

Yuanhe supplies the 6204 bearing with full customization for volume orders. Standard internal clearance is CN. C3 clearance is specified for electric motor applications where the inner ring operates 10°C to 20°C hotter than the outer ring during continuous duty — this thermal gradient reduces running clearance, and C3 prevents preload-induced torque rise and life reduction. C2 clearance suits precision spindle applications. C4 clearance is available for heavy interference fits.

Grease options range from standard polyurea (general purpose, -20°C to 120°C) to low-noise polyurea for electric motor applications (tested below 30 dB(A) on 6204-sized bearings), fluorinated high-temperature grease (intermittent to 150°C), and NSF H1 food-grade grease. Stainless steel 440C rings and balls are available for water pump, marine, and washdown service; note that 440C dynamic load rating decreases to approximately 10.2 kN. Cage materials: glass-fiber-reinforced PA66 (standard), machined brass for continuous duty above 120°C, and pressed steel. Electric motor-grade low-noise sorting (Z2/V2 or Z3/V3 vibration class) is available for OEM production. Standard lead time is 7 to 15 days with batch dimensional and noise-test reports. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 6204 bearing and the 6004 bearing? +
Both fit a 20mm shaft. The 6204 bearing measures 47mm OD x 14mm width with 12.8 kN dynamic load. The 6004 bearing measures 42mm OD x 12mm width with 9.36 kN dynamic load — 37 percent less capacity. The 6204 bearing requires 5mm more housing diameter and 2mm more width. In a 3 kW motor at rated load, the 6204 bearing delivers roughly double the L10 life of the 6004 bearing. Choose the 6004 bearing when housing diameter is the binding constraint. Choose the 6204 bearing when fatigue life determines the motor service interval.
How does the 6204 bearing compare to the 6203 bearing? +
The 6204 bearing steps up to 20mm bore (from 17mm), 47mm OD (from 40mm), and 14mm width (from 12mm). Dynamic load increases from 9.58 kN to 12.8 kN — a 33 percent gain. Ball diameter increases from 7.144mm to 7.938mm, increasing the contact area at the raceway. When the shaft must carry higher torque or overhung load, upgrading from the 6203 bearing to the 6204 bearing reduces contact stress and extends fatigue life by approximately 2.3 times at equivalent load.
What vibration class is standard for 6204 bearings used in electric motors? +
Standard production achieves Z2/V2 vibration class (medium noise). For quiet-running motor applications such as HVAC indoor units, office equipment, and residential appliances, Z3/V3 class (low noise, under 30 dB(A)) is available against specification. Vibration class is measured per ISO 15242 with the bearing running at 1,800 RPM under a defined axial load. Z3 sorting typically adds 48 hours to standard lead time for the additional noise testing per batch.
Can the 6204 bearing handle belt-drive radial loads in an industrial fan? +
Yes. The 12.8 kN dynamic rating accommodates belt-tension side loads up to approximately 2.5 kN at the bearing centerline, assuming a 1.2 service factor for moderate shock and 8-hour daily duty. For V-belt drives where tension can reach 3 times the transmitted load, calculate the resultant radial force at the bearing and verify it does not exceed 50 percent of the dynamic rating. If the resultant exceeds 6.4 kN (50 percent of Cr), consider stepping up to the 6304 bearing or specifying C3 clearance to accommodate the additional thermal load from belt friction heating.
