Crossed Roller Bearings

Crossed roller bearings use cylindrical rollers arranged at 90-degree alternating angles in V-shaped raceways. Each roller makes line contact with both inner and outer rings. Unlike ball bearings where load transmits through a single point, line contact distributes force across the full roller length. This gives a single crossed roller bearing the combined load capacity of two angular contact ball bearings plus a thrust bearing.

A roller oriented at 0° handles radial load plus axial load in one direction. The adjacent roller at 90° handles radial load plus axial load in the opposite direction. The V-groove raceway geometry locks the assembly, providing moment stiffness that exceeds ball-bearing equivalents by three to five times. For applications where a rotating platform must stay flat under off-center loads: robot arms, machine tool rotary tables, medical CT gantries. Crossed roller bearings are the bearing type that engineers specify for these requirements.

Yuanhe manufactures crossed roller bearings from 20mm to 500mm bore. Every bearing ships with dimensional inspection data: bore tolerance within P5 (ISO), runout under 0.005mm, and assembly height verified at four quadrant positions. Materials are GCr15 bearing steel through-hardened to HRC 60-64, with GCr15SiMn and stainless steel options for larger sections and corrosive environments. Cages are machined brass or polyamide, selected by application speed and temperature.

Designs and Variants

RB style: split outer ring, integrated inner ring. The inner ring rotates while the outer ring stays fixed. Two outer ring halves clamp together after roller installation. Common in robot wrist joints, index tables, and rotary actuators where the shaft drives through the inner bore.

RE style: split inner ring, integrated outer ring. The outer ring rotates with the housing. Used in hollow-shaft rotary tables where optical cables or pneumatic lines pass through the center. The integrated outer ring simplifies housing design.

RU style: integrated inner and outer rings with a thin rectangular cross-section. Both rings are solid with no split. Rollers are inserted through a filling slot, then secured with a spacer retainer. Bore range 30mm to 350mm. The ultra-thin profile, with cross-section height down to 8mm, suits semiconductor wafer handlers, medical imaging equipment, and precision measurement stages where axial space is constrained.

RA style: thin-section crossed roller bearing. Similar to RU but with a simpler single-piece spacer retainer. Bore range 30mm to 200mm. Lighter and lower-cost for lower-moment industrial automation applications.

CRB / CRBC style: open-type compact crossed roller bearings without integral mounting holes. CRBC includes a cage; CRB is full-complement with maximum roller count for highest load capacity at reduced speed. Used where the bearing mounts into a custom-designed housing rather than a standard catalog assembly.

Custom configurations: Yuanhe accepts non-standard bore sizes, special radial clearance, thin dense chrome plating for corrosion resistance, and high-temperature grease packing rated to 150°C continuous. Mounting holes, bolt circle diameters, and gear teeth on the rotating ring can be machined to your drawing. Minimum order from 1 prototype.

Applications

Industrial robotics: articulated arm joints, wrist axes, rotary positioners. The moment stiffness of crossed rollers keeps tool center point deflection under 0.01mm at full payload.

CNC machine tools: rotary tables, trunnion tables, milling head B-axes. P4 runout tolerance maintains part geometry across multi-axis simultaneous cuts.

Medical imaging: CT scanner gantries, MRI patient table rotation, C-arm positioning. RU-series thin-section bearings fit inside the 15mm to 30mm axial envelope these systems require.

Semiconductor manufacturing: wafer transfer robots, inspection stages, lithography mask aligners. Cleanroom-compatible grease and low-particle-generation seals are available.

Radar and antenna: azimuth and elevation axes for satellite communication dishes and military radar platforms. Corrosion-resistant stainless steel variants with salt-spray-tested seals.

Precision measurement: rotary encoders, optical comparator stages, coordinate measuring machine (CMM) rotary axes. P2-grade bearings with runout under 0.002mm for metrology applications.

Engineering Notes for Specification

Load ratings: crossed roller bearings carry combined radial, axial, and moment loads. When specifying, provide all three load components, not just radial. A bearing sized for radial load alone may fail under the combined moment.

Preload: all crossed roller bearings ship with factory-set preload. Do not field-adjust. The preload eliminates internal clearance and maximizes rigidity. If your application requires clearance instead of preload, for thermal expansion compensation, specify at order.

Lubrication: standard fill is lithium soap grease with mineral base oil, rated -20°C to 120°C. High-temperature grease rated -40°C to 150°C and vacuum-compatible grease are available. Relubrication intervals depend on speed, load, and duty cycle. Contact Yuanhe with your operating parameters for a calculation.

Mounting: crossed roller bearings mount with bolts through the inner and outer rings. Flatness of the mounting surface must be within 0.01mm per 100mm of bearing diameter. A non-flat mounting surface distorts the rings and increases running torque.
