6901 Deep Groove Ball Bearing 12x24x6mm

Twelve millimeters is a workhorse shaft diameter in compact power tools, office equipment, and light industrial machinery. The 6901 bearing mates to this shaft with a 24mm outside diameter and 6mm width :  the narrowest OD envelope available for a 12mm-bore deep groove ball bearing. Three seal configurations share 2.89 kN dynamic capacity and 1.46 kN static capacity from the same GCr15 ring-and-ball set. ABEC-3 precision and 30,000 RPM capability make it the bearing engineers specify when radial space is the binding constraint.

Sealing and Lubrication

At 12mm bore, seal selection involves a trade-off most engineers recognize: contact seals protect better but add measurable drag at high RPM. The 6901 bearing makes this choice explicit. The 6901 Open bearing delivers the full 30,000 RPM with zero seal friction. It accepts oil-mist lubrication directly through the exposed ball path, which is why gearbox designers and pump manufacturers specify it for oil-bath environments where the housing already provides the contamination barrier.

The 6901 ZZ bearing presses SPCC steel shields into outer-ring grooves. The shields never contact the inner ring, so the 30,000 RPM ceiling stays intact. A 0.15-0.25mm labyrinth gap around the inner ring shoulder blocks dust and coarse particles but passes oil mist and fine moisture. Factory-filled polyurea grease covers the -20°C to 120°C range. ZZ is the default choice for enclosed fan motors, office equipment drives, and power tool armatures where the bearing sees intermittent splash but not direct spray.

The 6901 2RS bearing uses nitrile rubber contact seals riding in inner-ring grooves. At 12mm bore, the seal contact circumference is only 38mm; the drag torque is proportionally lower than on larger bearings. This keeps the 2RS speed limit at ~24,000 RPM rather than the more severe derating seen on 17mm+ bore sizes. The positive-contact lip blocks sub-micron dust, direct water spray, and humid air. Choose 2RS for outdoor power equipment, agricultural sprayers, and gym equipment where the bearing faces sweat and cleaning chemicals.

Performance

At 2.89 kN dynamic load, the 6901 bearing carries roughly 40% more radial load than the 6900 bearing (10mm bore, 2.02 kN) while adding only 2mm to bore and 2mm to OD. The 6mm width stays constant across the 6900 bearing and 6901 bearing; the load gain comes entirely from the larger ball complement enabled by the 2mm bore increase. For engineers upgrading a 10mm shaft design to 12mm, the 6901 bearing often drops into the same housing footprint after a simple rebore from 22mm to 24mm. No housing redesign. No increased width. Just more load capacity.

The 6901 bearing also holds a unique position against the 6001 bearing. Both fit a 12mm shaft, but the 6001 needs a 28mm housing bore and 8mm width. The 6901 bearing saves 4mm in diameter and 2mm in width; a 25% smaller radial cross-section. The trade-off: the 6001 carries 5.10 kN dynamic load (77% more). If the housing envelope is fixed at 24mm OD and the load stays under 2.9 kN, the 6901 bearing is the only standard 12mm-bore option that fits. No custom thin-section bearing required.

ABEC-3 radial runout of 0.013mm is standard. The 6mm width, shared with the 6900 bearing, keeps the bearing narrow enough for paired mounting in gearboxes and compact enough that it does not dictate the tool grip diameter in hand-held power tools. At 30,000 RPM on a 12mm shaft, the bearing surface speed at the ball-race contact reaches approximately 12 m/s; well within the capability of standard polyurea grease without oil-mist supplementation.

OEM and Customization

Yuanhe delivers the 6901 bearing with C3 radial clearance and polyurea grease as the production standard. For OEM orders, four customization paths cover the majority of application-specific requirements:

Clearance: C2 for low-noise encoder and scanner shafts where vibration signature matters; C4 for motor housings that run 80°C+ and close the running clearance through differential expansion
Grease: Low-noise polyurea reduces audible bearing noise by 3-5 dB for medical centrifuges, office copiers, and noise-sensitive power tools. Ester-based grease extends the upper limit to 150°C. NSF H1 food-grade grease for processing equipment with incidental food contact
Cage: Standard pressed steel for most applications. Glass-reinforced polyamide 66 (PA66-GF) reduces rotating mass by roughly 30% and cuts running torque for battery-powered tools where every watt-hour counts. Brass machined cage for continuous vibration above 5g
Material: 440C stainless steel rings and balls for outdoor equipment, marine deck hardware, and food-processing lines where the bearing sees moisture but not full submersion. Hybrid ceramic (Si3N4 balls with steel rings) for electrical insulation in motor applications where shaft currents are a concern

MOQ for modified clearance or custom grease starts at 500 pcs. Submit your bearing drawing or part number for a quote that includes lead time and batch inspection terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the 6901 bearing thinner than a 6001 bearing, and when does that matter? +
The 6901 bearing measures 12x24x6mm; the 6001 measures 12x28x8mm. The 4mm OD difference and 2mm width difference come from the 6900-series thin-section design philosophy: the rings have a smaller radial cross-section than the 6000-series. This matters when housing wall thickness is the constraint; in power tool gear housings, drone motor mounts, and office equipment frames where every millimeter of radial space is occupied by adjacent components. The trade-off is load capacity: the 6901 bearing carries 2.89 kN versus 5.10 kN for the 6001. If the housing bore is machined for 24mm and the load is under 2.9 kN, specify the 6901 bearing. If the housing can accept 28mm, the 6001 bearing gives you the load headroom. Contact us with your envelope constraints for a recommendation.
Can a 6901 bearing run at 30,000 RPM continuously, or is that a peak rating? +
The 30,000 RPM rating applies to the Open and ZZ configurations under the following conditions: standard polyurea grease fill (25-35% of free volume), horizontal shaft orientation, ambient temperature below 80°C at the bearing outer ring, and radial load below 10% of the dynamic rating (~0.29 kN). Continuous operation at 30,000 RPM is achievable with oil-mist lubrication in Open configuration. For ZZ configuration at 30,000 RPM, the polyurea grease service life shortens; plan for relubrication intervals based on your operating temperature and load spectrum. The 2RS configuration is limited to ~24,000 RPM because the rubber seal lip generates heat proportional to surface speed. For applications above 24,000 RPM that need contamination protection, consider the ZZ configuration with a separate shaft seal in the housing.
What shaft and housing fit does a 6901 bearing need for a motor application? +
For a standard electric motor with a 12mm shaft running at moderate load, the shaft seat should be machined to j5 tolerance (12 +0.005/-0.003mm) and the housing bore to J6 (24 +0.006/-0.007mm). For higher-speed applications approaching 30,000 RPM, tighten the shaft to h5 (12 +0/-0.006mm) to minimize imbalance and the housing to H6 (24 +0.013/0mm) with a light press fit. The 6mm width requires a shaft shoulder and housing shoulder square within 0.01mm across the bearing seat face. Snap ring grooves are common for axial location; ensure the groove corner radius (0.3mm max) clears the bearing outer ring chamfer (0.3mm nominal on the 6901 bearing).
Why does the 6901 2RS bearing have a smaller speed penalty compared to larger 2RS bearings? +
The speed penalty for a rubber contact seal scales with seal lip circumference, not with bearing bore. The 6901 bearing inner ring has a seal contact diameter of approximately 12mm, giving a seal lip circumference of about 38mm. A 6905 bearing (25mm bore) has a ~79mm seal circumference; more than double. The frictional heat generated at the seal lip is proportional to circumference times surface speed. At the same RPM, the 6901 2RS bearing generates roughly half the seal friction heat of a 6905 2RS bearing. This is why the 6901 2RS bearing can sustain ~24,000 RPM (80% of the open speed) while larger 2RS bearings in the series drop to 65-70% of their open speed. Engineers designing for 12mm shafts get proportionally more speed headroom from the sealed configuration.
