685 ZZ Miniature Deep Groove Ball Bearing 5x11x5mm

With an 11mm OD, the 685 ZZ is the narrowest bearing in the 5mm bore series. When a design packs a 5mm shaft into a housing that tolerates no more than 11mm of bearing space, this is the bearing that fits. Metal-shielded and pre-lubricated, it runs at speeds up to 53,000 RPM.

Shielding and Lubrication

The 685 ZZ uses pressed steel shields (SPCC) on both sides. Unlike rubber contact seals, metal shields do not touch the inner ring. This non-contact design removes seal friction entirely. At 51,000 RPM, the ZZ configuration outruns rubber-sealed equivalents by roughly 15 percent. The tradeoff: metal shields block coarse dust but offer less resistance to moisture and fine particles. Factory-filled with grease and lubricated for life within the -40 to 120°C service range.

Performance

Within the 5mm bore deep groove ball bearing series, the 685 occupies the smallest-OD position at 11mm. The 695 (5x13x4mm) gains 2mm OD for higher load capacity. If 11mm OD is the hard design constraint, specify 685. Chrome steel (GCr15) races and balls, stamped steel cage. This bearing is manufactured to precision bearing standards with ABEC-3 tolerance as standard.

OEM and Customization

Custom internal clearance (C2, CN, C3) and alternate grease fills are available for volume orders. Common requests include C2 clearance for encoder applications and low-noise grease for medical handpiece spindles. Batch inspection reports and dimensional tolerance documentation provided on request. Submit your custom bearing specification for a quote.

Miniature gearboxes
RC servos and hobby motors

FAQ

What precision instruments use the 685 ZZ bearing? +
The 685 ZZ appears in dental handpieces, micro-drills, precision potentiometers, small cooling fans, and model aircraft engines. Its 5x11x5mm size with metal shields provides contamination protection without sacrificing speed, making it suitable for hand-held precision tools that operate in less-than-clean environments.
What RPM can the 685 ZZ achieve? +
The 685 ZZ bearing reaches 51,000 RPM with grease lubrication. Metal shields are non-contact, adding no friction penalty to the rotational speed. The small 11mm OD keeps centrifugal forces on the balls low, allowing high rotational speeds. For sustained operation above 40,000 RPM, ensure adequate heat dissipation and verify that the bearing housing provides proper support.
What is the radial internal clearance of the 685 ZZ? +
Standard 685 ZZ bearings ship with CN (normal) radial internal clearance. For applications with interference fits or thermal gradients, C3 clearance provides additional internal space. The 685 ZZ uses a deeper groove geometry relative to its ball size, giving it better axial capacity than many miniature bearings of similar dimensions.
Does the 685 ZZ need to be relubricated? +
No. The 685 ZZ is factory-filled with grease and the metal shields are pressed in place. It is designed as a lubed-for-life bearing under normal operating conditions. If the bearing runs at very high speed or elevated temperature, contact Yuanhe for alternative grease specifications at the time of ordering.
