Shielding and Lubrication

The 6301 bearing ships in three sealing configurations, each matched to a distinct operating environment. Open bearings (no seals) run in oil-bath or circulating-oil systems where external lubrication is already present. Without seal drag, the open 6301 bearing reaches 20,000 RPM, making it the correct choice for high-speed spindle and motor applications where the housing provides contamination control.

ZZ metal-shielded bearings use non-contact steel shields pressed into the outer ring. The 0.2mm to 0.4mm gap between shield and inner ring land keeps out coarse particles without generating friction heat. ZZ 6301 bearings run to 17,000 RPM and suit electric motor, fan, and pump applications where moderate dust protection is sufficient and speed matters more than full sealing.

2RS rubber-sealed bearings use nitrile contact seals riding on the inner ring land. The 12mm width of the 6301 bearing provides a larger grease reservoir than the 6201 bearing (10mm width), extending relubrication intervals. At 14,000 RPM, the 2RS 6301 handles agricultural equipment, conveyor rollers, and outdoor machinery where water, mud, and abrasive dust are routine. The contact seal lip generates measurable drag  expect 2°C to 5°C higher steady-state temperature than the equivalent ZZ bearing at the same speed.


Performance

Compared to the 6201 bearing on the same 12mm shaft, the 6301 bearing provides a 42% increase in dynamic load and a 67% increase in static load. This comes from a 5mm larger OD (37mm vs 32mm) and 2mm wider cross-section (12mm vs 10mm). The larger section accommodates larger-diameter balls and deeper raceway grooves. For a design running a 6201 bearing at 6.82 kN Cr near its fatigue limit, switching to a 6301 bearing at the same 12mm shaft diameter extends calculated L10 life by a factor of approximately 2.8, assuming identical load and speed.

Against the 6300 bearing (10×35×11mm), the 6301 bearing adds 2mm of bore diameter while increasing dynamic capacity by 21% (9.72 kN vs 8.06 kN). For designers constrained to a 12mm shaft but with housing space for a 37mm OD bearing, the 6301 bearing represents the highest-capacity single-row deep groove ball bearing in its bore class. Moving one step up to the 6302 (15×42×13mm) gains 1.68 kN more dynamic load at the cost of a 3mm larger shaft diameter. This positions the 6301 bearing as the load-capacity ceiling for 12mm shaft designs.

Radial internal clearance is CN as standard. For interference-fit housings (steel in aluminum, or heavy press fits), C3 clearance compensates for thermal expansion and ring compression. At C3 clearance and moderate axial load (≤1.9 kN), the contact angle shifts approximately 8° to 12°, sufficient for combined radial-axial loading in gearbox and actuator applications.
