685 2RS Miniature Deep Groove Ball Bearing 5x11x5mm

The 685 2RS miniature bearing 5x11x5 is a high quality premium ball bearing. This premium miniature ball bearing meets ABEC-3 precision standards for a high degree of accuracy and consistency. It has fine ground raceways and motor quality rated construction making it ideal for electric motors. The bearing uses premium grade 10 bearing balls for strength and durability. This makes it an excellent choice for applications requiring high precision and quality.

Rubber seals on the ball bearings keep out dust etc. This also helps preserve the lubricant. These deep groove ball bearings are versatile, durable and relatively easy to maintain.

At Yuanhe, we stock a wide range of miniature ball bearings, available as open, sealed or shielded. Miniature ball bearings can be used in a wide variety of operating conditions from the simplest to the most complex.

Sealing and Lubrication

Most small DC motors spin on a 5mm shaft. When the housing bore is capped at 11mm, the 685 2RS bearing is what fits. At 11mm OD, each 2RS seal lip runs on a contact ring of roughly 30mm circumference. That tiny patch creates its own engineering constraint: the NBR lip must press firmly enough to exclude particles down to 5 to 10 microns, but lightly enough not to drain the bearing’s already modest torque budget.

NBR seals handle water splash, light chemicals, and airborne dust. For steam sterilization or aggressive cleaning agents, FKM seals are available on request. Each bearing ships pre-filled with a low-noise mineral grease rated for the full operating temperature range of -40°C to 120°C.

At 40,000 RPM with 2RS seals, seal drag consumes roughly 10 to 15 percent of available torque compared to an open bearing. For clean sealed cavities where speed matters more than contamination protection, the 685 ZZ bearing uses non-contact metal shields that add almost zero drag and reach 51,000 RPM. The trade-off: ZZ shields block coarse debris but do not seal against moisture or fine dust.

Performance

Within the 5mm-bore miniature bearing family, the 685 bearing sits between two alternatives. The 684 bearing (4x9x4mm) has a smaller bore and cannot fit a 5mm shaft. The 695 bearing (5x13x4mm) shares the 5mm bore but widens to 13mm OD and thins to 4mm width, gaining roughly double the radial load capacity at the cost of 1mm less axial stability. If 13mm OD fits the housing, the 695 carries more load. If 11mm is the hard upper bound, the 685 bearing is the only sealed option in the 5mm bore family.

The 686 bearing (6x13x5mm) steps up to a 6mm bore with 1.08 kN dynamic load. If the shaft can be designed to 6mm, it delivers roughly 50 percent more load capacity inside nearly the same OD. For designs locked at 5mm shaft and 11mm housing, the 685 bearing is the answer.

ABEC-3 is the standard precision grade. ABEC-1 is available for cost-driven applications. ABEC-5 is offered for encoder spindles and optical instruments requiring sub-5-micron runout control. Standard radial clearance is CN, with C2 and C3 available on OEM orders.

OEM and Customization

Standard 685 2RS bearings ship in GCr15 chrome steel with CN radial clearance and NBR contact seals. Yuanhe offers the following modifications for volume OEM orders:

440C Stainless Steel

Rings and balls in 440C martensitic stainless for medical instruments and food processing equipment exposed to autoclave sterilization and saline solutions.

C2 Reduced Clearance

For encoder shafts and optical spindles where radial play must stay below roughly 3 to 5 microns at operating temperature.

Low-Noise Grease

NLGI 1 or lighter grease with ZV2/ZV3 noise testing for dental handpieces and consumer products where audible bearing noise affects perceived quality.

Hybrid Ceramic (Si3N4)

Silicon nitride balls for applications pushing toward 55,000 to 60,000 RPM. Lower-density ceramic elements reduce centrifugal force on the cage.

Standard lead time is 7 to 14 days for catalog configurations. Custom builds add roughly 5 to 10 days. MOQ from 100 pieces standard, 500 pieces for non-catalog configs. Send a drawing for a formal quotation.

Applications

Small DC and stepper motors with 5mm shafts, RC servo actuators, miniature cooling fans, dental handpiece turbines, optical encoder spindles, 3D printer extruder idlers, precision potentiometers, handheld medical instruments, micro pump rotors, model railway traction motors, laboratory stirring equipment, small robotic joint drives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 2RS mean on the 685 bearing? +
2RS means the 685 bearing has rubber contact seals on both sides. Each seal is an NBR (nitrile rubber) lip bonded to an SPCC steel insert pressed into the outer ring, making light contact with the inner ring shoulder. Unlike ZZ metal shields which leave a radial gap, 2RS seals form a physical barrier against dust, moisture, and light splashing while retaining factory-filled grease. The trade-off is roughly 10 to 15 percent lower maximum RPM due to seal lip friction.
What is the load rating of a 685 2RS bearing? +
The 685 2RS bearing has a dynamic load rating (Cr) of 0.715 kN and a static load rating (C0r) of 0.282 kN in GCr15 chrome steel at room temperature. For elevated temperatures, shock loading, or extended duty cycles, contact Yuanhe for an application review and load-life calculation.
What is the difference between 685 ZZ and 685 2RS? +
The 685 ZZ bearing uses non-contact SPCC metal shields with effectively zero seal drag, reaching roughly 51,000 RPM. Shields block coarse debris but not moisture or fine dust. The 685 2RS bearing uses contact rubber seals with more drag (max roughly 40,000 RPM) but a positive seal against water splash, dust, and grease leakage. Choose ZZ for clean high-speed cavities. Choose 2RS for dusty, damp, or unsealed environments.
Can I order 685 bearings with C2 or C3 clearance? +
Yes. Standard 685 2RS bearings ship with CN (normal) radial internal clearance. C2 (reduced) suits precision spindles and encoder shafts where radial play must stay under roughly 3 to 5 microns. C3 (increased) accommodates press-fit mounting into steel housings or elevated-temperature operation where thermal expansion reduces effective running clearance. Both are available on OEM orders.
